Irish contractor PST Sport is currently busy replacing the natural grass surface of the Independent Stadium in Cork with an artificial grass surface made by CC Grass.

Once finished Independent Stadium will be the first rugby venue in the south of the Munster province to have a suitable artificial grass surface.

Funded in part by Munster Rugby’s own commercial revenue streams, including the Munster Rugby Annual London Dinner, and a Sports Capital Grant, the new artificial pitch will allow for a significant increase in games played and hosted events, on a consistent basis, assisting the province’s efforts of growing the game at grassroots level.

The venue already hosts 54 games a season. Once completed stadium management will pursue additional commercial opportunities for the facilities, including renting out its facilities to local schools.

‘In terms of facilities, it is fantastic to see this phase of our long-term strategy progressing. Since 2015 we have installed a new 3,500 seated stand and covered terrace at Irish Independent Park, improved match-day facilities, and will now have access to a consistently world-class surface all season.

‘Better facilities cater for greater access and the venue is central to Munster Rugby’s plans for growth and development. This is a valuable addition to the rugby landscape in Cork and the province,’ says Munster Rugby Head of Operations, Philip Quinn.

PST Sport CEO, Colin Teahan feels that Munster Rugby made right choice. ‘This pitch will allow Munster players of all ages to play on the same surface as their heroes, year-round, and whatever the weather. I believe it will help move Munster Rugby to another level, and our team at PST Sport are delighted to play our part.’

PST Sport has indicated that it will take up to ten weeks to complete the project. They offer a 12-year manufacturer’s warranty based on 30 hours usage per week on the field. The period is remarkable as most companies only offer eight year warranty.

Nevertheless, as they will install a carpet that is tufted by by CCGrass, the largest producer of artificial grass worldwide and one of only three manufacturers with preferred producer status to World Rugby, FIFA and FIH, the company is confident it can do so.

‘This stadium grade artificial grass turf is highly resilient while maintaining the soft touch and feel of natural grass. Infill splash control is one of many unique benefits, delivered using a combination of monofilament and thatched yarns along with PST Sport’s cutting edge installation techniques,’ the company claims.
